In Memoriam: Douglas Ruth, P.Eng., FCAE

It is with great sadness that we learned of Doug Ruth’s passing on January 11, 2021. Dr. Ruth, P.Eng., FCAE was Professor and Dean Emeritus at the University of Manitoba. He served on the Council of Canadian Academies’ (CCA) Board of Director’s from 2017 to 2020 in his capacity as President and Past President of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE). Generous with his time and expertise, his contributions as a Board member helped to shape the governance of the CCA. He was a wonderful colleague and friend.

Dr. Ruth held a B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the University of Manitoba and a doctorate from the University of Waterloo. He held academic appointments at both the University of Calgary and the University of Manitoba, including as Dean of the Price Faculty of Engineering at the University of Manitoba from 1999 to 2010. In addition to serving as Dean, he was Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Associate Dean of Engineering for Design Education, NSERC Chair in Design Engineering, and Director of the Centre for Engineering Professional Practice and Engineering Education. He officially retired in December 2018.

Dr. Ruth was elected as a Fellow of the CAE in 2008, served on the Board of Directors beginning in 2013, and served as President for the 2016/2018 term. He was a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada and of Engineers Canada, and served for 12 years as a member of the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board, including 2 years as Chair.

He will be missed by many and our deepest sympathies go out to his family, friends, and colleagues. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Doug and Beverly Ruth Centenary Award in Engineering scholarship at the University of Manitoba.
