Canada has the world’s longest coastline, vast ocean territories, and deep connections to the sea—economically, ecologically, and culturally. The challenges we face—from climate change and biodiversity loss to global security and international trade—demand strategic and collaborative action, informed by leading evidence and supported by forward-thinking policies.
The Council of Canadian Academies (CCA) is pleased to work with the Marine Environmental Observation, Prediction and Response Network (MEOPAR) as they launch a new initiative to shape a collaborative future for ocean research in Canada. The initiative builds on the CCA’s record of impact examining priorities and opportunities for ocean research.
The project begins with broad engagement across the ocean research community, including a national survey and a series of targeted events and consultations. We’re inviting experts and leaders from across sectors to share their insights on the needs, pressures, and priorities driving ocean research in Canada.
The feedback will help shape the direction for an independent assessment led by the CCA, to launch in late 2025. Known for delivering rigorous, evidence-based assessments on complex public policy issues, the CCA will bring together a multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral panel of experts to answer critical questions on the future of Canada’s ocean research. The resulting report will provide actionable insights to guide decision-making and investment across sectors, research institutions, and at all levels of government.
We’re looking to connect with organizations and individuals who are passionate about the future of ocean science in Canada. Whether you’re interested in shaping the process, participating in upcoming engagement opportunities, or supporting the assessment as a financial partner, we want to hear from you.
