Tom Brzustowski currently serves as a member of the Board of the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) at the University of Waterloo, and of the Waterloo Global Science Initiative (WGSI). He was the RBC Professor for the Commercialization of Innovation in the School of Management at the University of Ottawa (2005 to 2012) and the founding Chair of the Board of IQC (2006 to 2014). He served as President of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) from 1995 to 2005. At Council of Canadian Academies he was a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee and its Chair from 2010 to 2012.

A professional engineer, Dr. Brzustowski graduated with a B.Sc. in Engineering Physics from the University of Toronto in 1958, and a PhD in Aeronautical Engineering from Princeton in 1963. Dr. Brzustowski was a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Waterloo from 1962 to 1987. He also served as Chair of Mechanical Engineering (1967 to 1970), Vice-President, Academic of the University of Waterloo (1975 to 1987) and Deputy Minister in the Government of Ontario (1987 to 1995).

Dr. Brzustowski holds honorary doctorates from a number of Canadian universities, and is a recipient of the Engineering Alumni Medal from the University of Toronto and the Gold Medal of the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers and the Professional Engineers of Ontario. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada and a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and of the Royal Society of Canada.
