Dr. Rosaline Canessa is Associate Dean at the Faculty of Social Sciences, and Associate Professor at the Department of Geography, at the University of Victoria. Dr. Canessa also serves as the Canadian representative on the CoastGIS Association. Before joining the Department of Geography, Dr. Canessa worked as a marine environmental scientist in Scotland, the Caribbean, and Canada.
Dr. Canessa holds a PhD from the University of Victoria. Her research focuses on place-based coastal resource management and the use of spatial technologies such as GIS and seascape visualization to support marine planning, particularly in collaborative settings. Her research has been applied to aquaculture, recreational boating, offshore hydrocarbon exploration and development, shipping, and marine protected areas. Her current work relates to ocean noise related to shipping, and marine geovisualization for marine protected area planning, education and outreach, and coastal place attachment.
Dr. Canessa had authored a number of publications, on topics such as coastal management, oil in Canadian waters, and maritime search and rescue planning. Dr. Canessa has served as Vice President for the Coastal Zone Canada Association and currently serves as President for SeaChange Marine Conservation Society.
