Paul A. Demers

Dr. Demers is the director of the School of Environmental Health and is also a professor in the School of Population and Public Health, University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver (British Columbia), Canada. His research has focused on occupational and environmental cancer, lung disease, and heart disease. His recent epidemiologic studies have been retrospective cohort studies of firefighters, paramedics, aluminum smelter workers, and sawmill workers, as well as on the impact of air pollution. In addition, he has an interest in both occupational carcinogen and cancer surveillance. He is the director of the CAREX Canada project, a national occupational and environmental hazard surveillance program. He is also involved in several surveillance studies of asbestos-related disease. He has been a member of a number of Working Groups for the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risk to Humans for the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). He is also currently a member of the Formaldehyde Expert Panel of the U.S. National Toxicology Program and the Expert Panel to Develop an Occupational Exposure Limit for Fire Smoke for the U.S. Forest Service. He was a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine Committee on Asbestos.

Dr. Demers has a PhD in epidemiology and a master’s degree in industrial hygiene, both from the University of Washington (Seattle).
