Dr. Kristian Behrens is currently the editor of Oxford University Press’ Journal of Economic Geography and an associate editor of the Review of International Economics. He formerly served on the editorial boards of the Canadian Journal of Economics and Papers in Regional Science.

Kristian Behrens is also a Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR, London, UK) and an Academic Advisor of the Center for Market Studies and Spatial Economics (CMSSE, Higher School of Economics, Russia). He was appointed as a member of the founding cohort of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada in November 2014.

Dr. Behrens’ main fields of research are in urban and regional economics, and in international trade. His current research projects blend theoretical economic models and detailed empirical analyses to better understand the micro-geographical patterns of economic activity in Canada and the processes of urban and regional change in large U.S. metro areas such as New York or Detroit. He is also interested in quantifiable general equilibrium analysis and transportation broadly defined, with a special interest in the regional impacts of globalization and market integration broadly defined.

Dr. Behrens has (co)authored and published more than 40 articles in peer-reviewed scholarly journals, including the Journal of Political Economy, the Economic Journal, the International Economic Review, the Review of Economics and Statistics, and the Journal of International Economics. He is a well-know and widely recognized scholar in the fields of spatial and international economics and was recipient of the August Lösch Award in 2012, the Geoffrey J.D. Hewings Award in 2012, and the Prix Marcel-Dagenais in 2015. In 2015, he was ranked by the newspaper ‘Handelsblatt’ as the best young German academic economist based in a university outside of the German-speaking world.
