Chief Engineer for FPInnovations since 2022, he previously served as Vice President – Industry, Partnerships and Intellectual Property (2017-2022) and Vice President Pulp, Paper and Bioproducts (2009-2017) for the same organization.

Mr. Hamel has substantial R&D industrial experience and innovation deployment in the forest products sector. His work has included accelerating research projects, developing and leading a significant R&D program that developed new chemicals, biomaterials and their applications, as well as supporting the operational excellence of the forest products industry. He oversaw the development of the technologies and the activities that led to four demonstration plants in Canada that produce different biomaterials and bio-sourced chemicals. Mr. Hamel was in charge of coordinating and managing relations with industry and partners to develop FPInnovations research programs and technology transfer programs to support the industry. Mr. Hamel is now working at supporting the research teams to accelerate the innovation with rigorous approaches.

Jean holds a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Université de Sherbrooke and has served on the boards of four different technologies-related organizations and one start-up company, and is Chair of the Board at Bioindustrial Innovation Canada.
