Gord McKenna is a Senior Geotechnical Engineer at BGC Engineering Inc. in Vancouver. He is also Adjunct Professor in the Department of Renewable Resources at the University of Alberta.

Dr. McKenna has 26 years of experience as a geotechnical engineer in the mining industry, including 17 years at Syncrude Canada’s Mildred Lake oil sands mine in northeastern Alberta, with the past nine years as a geotechnical consultant to mines in Canada, the United States, and Central and South America. His specialties include landform design and closure planning, oil sands geotechnique, mine waste geotechnique, and tailings technology development. More specifically, Dr. McKenna has been working on mine closure and landform design for the past 18 years, including preparation of several closure planning and design guides.

Dr. McKenna has a BASc. in Geological Engineering from the University of British Columbia and a PhD in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Alberta.
