Catherine Jumarie

Dr. Catherine Jumarie is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the Université du Québec à Montreal.

Dr. Catherine Jumarie holds a B.Sc. (1989) in physics, biophysics option, and a PhD in physiology (1995) from the Université de Montréal. Her doctoral dissertation focussed on the hormonal regulation of enterocyte differentiation. While completing her postdoctoral fellowship at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), she characterized the intestinal transport of heavy metals, including cadmium, using in vitro models. As professor at UQAM’s Department of Biological Sciences since 1998, Dr. Jumarie has furthered her research into the mechanisms of heavy-metal transport across biological membranes. She investigates intestinal and pulmonary epithelia in terms of absorption and target organs. This work leads her to examine the roles of metal speciation, oxydative stress and coping mechanisms in transport kinetics as well as the effects of metals on cellular signalling pathways. Her contribution to collaborative research has broadened her field of study to include other target tissues, including bone tissue, and some aquatic species.

Dr. Jumarie is a member of the Centre Interinstitutionnel de Recherche en Écotoxicologie (CIRÉ) through its Montreal-based affiliate, TOXEN, and is an associate member of the Groupe d’étude des protéines membranaires (GÉPROM) of the Université de Montréal. She has also contributed to the Canadian Network of Toxicology Centres (CNTC) and the NSERC strategic network, Metals in the Human Environment (MITHE).
