Barry Thompson is the Manager of the Sustainable Agriculture Resources Section with the Department of Agriculture in Prince Edward Island. The section is responsible for the development and implementation of the province’s nutrient management strategy. The section provides technical assistance to soil conservation and integrated pest management strategies, and encourages beneficial management practices that reduce environmental risk and enhance Prince Edward Island’s soil, water, air and biodiversity resources.

Mr. Thompson is the Department of Agriculture’s scientific advisor for both the Souris River Watershed Evaluation of Beneficial Practices (WEBs) project and the Nutrient Management Group Planning process for two pilot watersheds in PEI. In addition, Mr. Thompson represents the Department of Agriculture on the Advisory Committee, responsible for developing the province’s response to the recommendations put forth in the Commissions on Nitrates in Groundwater.

Prior to his current position, Mr. Thompson worked as the Department’s Agriculture Resources Development Coordinator and was involved with both small and farm-scale soil fertility research in collaboration with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Agri-business Industry.

Mr. Thompson has an degree in agriculture with a major in Soil Science from McGill University.
