Bilingual Communication and Translation Specialist

Location: On-site in Ottawa or remote from anywhere in Canada

Salary: $61,000-$95,000 (commensurate with skills and experience)

The Council of Canadian Academies (CCA) is looking for an experienced bilingual science communicator to join our team of diverse professionals committed to supporting evidence-informed policy and practice in Canada.

The CCA convenes the best experts in their respective fields to assess the evidence on complex topics of public interest to inform decision-making in Canada. We produce high-quality, bilingual reports designed to strengthen policy and practice by providing decision makers with the best-available evidence.

The Bilingual Communications and Translation Specialist reports to the Director of Communications and plays a lead role in maintaining the quality of French-language products at the CCA. They also provide bilingual communications support to CCA assessments more broadly, advising research teams on effective strategies and creating communication and knowledge mobilization content across a variety of platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the planning, implementation and evaluation of corporate and assessment communication activities
  • Provide communications support to assessment teams and expert panels
  • Produce communications products related to assessments (news releases, summaries, Q&A) across a variety of platforms
  • Perform quality assurance and revision on translated content, including assessment reports and corporate documents and communication products
  • Liaise with translation contractors and research teams to ensure consistent and high-quality French products
  • Maintain translation tools and processes, including French style guide 
  • Translate brief, time-sensitive content
  • Monitor and curate French-language media and social media
  • Maintain CCA core principles of independence, objectivity and quality

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience
  • Strong writing skills in both English and French
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team of multidisciplinary professionals
  • Expertise in creating accessible, evidence-based content across a variety of platforms
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Demonstrated understanding of social media principles and practices
  • Experience in and/or knowledge of Canadian public policy environment
  • Significant understanding of the research process and evidence-informed decision making
  • Significant experience with translation and demonstrated ability to perform brief translations
  • Significant experience in project planning and management
  • Superior attention to detail
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills in both French and English
  • A university degree (graduate degree preferred)

Bilingualism is essential for this position. Language testing will be required for all candidates.
