(Ottawa – October 16, 2015) The Council of Canadian Academies is pleased to announce the appointment of an expert panel to undertake a two-day workshop on the Risks of Marine Shipping in Canadian Waters.
Under the guidance of its Scientific Advisory Committee, the Council has assembled an independent, multidisciplinary expert panel that includes researchers, marine experts, and industry representatives. Visit the Workshop Expert Panel page for a complete list of the panel members and their bios.
As announced in July, the Clear Seas Centre for Responsible Marine Shipping (Clear Seas), approached the Council to undertake an expert panel workshop, with the following question as a guide:
What are the main areas of social, environmental, and economic risk associated with key stages of marine shipping of goods in Canadian waters? Are these risks commonly agreed upon? To what extent are they measurable?
A four-member steering committee, led by Captain Dr. James R. Parsons, was earlier appointed by the Council’s Board to direct the preparations for the workshop, including background research and an evidence gathering survey.
The workshop will take place October 29-30, 2015, the results of which will be a report, published in the spring of 2016, that characterizes the social, environmental, and economic risks of commercial marine shipping. The report is expected to complement a follow-on project, also commissioned by Clear Seas, which assesses the socio-economic value of commercial marine shipping.
