Susan A. McDaniel to serve as Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee; the Council bids a fond farewell to Tom Brzustowski

The Council of Canadian Academies is pleased to announce the appointment of Susan A. McDaniel, FRSC, as Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) for the Council of Canadian Academies. The Council would also like to extend a sincere thanks to Tom Brzustowski, FRSC, FCAE, for the fulfillment of his role as Chair since 2010.

Dr. McDaniel, who previously served as Vice Chair of SAC, is Director of the Prentice Institute; Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Global Population and Life Course; Prentice Research Chair in Global Population and Economy; and Professor of Sociology at the University of Lethbridge. Dr. McDaniel has supported the Council for many years. As a member of SAC, she worked to ensure that expert panels and questions for assessment are multidisciplinary in nature, allowing for deeper insights and perspectives to come forward.

“We bid a very fond farewell to Tom Brzustowski, who served as a dedicated member of our Scientific Advisory Committee since the Council’s inception,” said Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Council President and CEO. “Dr. Brzustowski has played a critical leadership role on the Committee and I would like to thank him for his long-standing support and encouragement. On behalf of the Council, I would also like to warmly welcome and thank Susan McDaniel as she takes on the role of Chair.”

The role of SAC is to advise the Council’s Board with respect to the selection of assessment topics, terms of reference, and peer review. The members of SAC are eminent representatives of the broad science community, drawing from the academic, business, and non-governmental sectors. Membership reflects balance in terms of discipline, geography, gender and official language community.
