Jason Akearok is an Inuk from Sanirajak, Nunavut and currently serves as the Executive Director of the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board (NWMB). He has extensive academic and professional experience in wildlife research, wildlife management, and the use of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit in wildlife decision-making.
Throughout his career, Mr. Akearok has worked in various roles, including as a seabird technician, habitat biologist, and a technical advisor to the NWMB, where he provided expertise on the status of endangered wildlife and ecological conditions within the Nunavut Land Claim Agreement territory. As a biologist with the Canadian Wildlife Service, he contributed to research that played a key role in the listing of marine birds under Canada’s federal Species at Risk Act. In his current role at the NWMB, Mr. Akearok works collaboratively on wildlife issues that are important to Inuit, partnering with Inuit, Nunavut communities, government, and other stakeholders to integrate Inuit Knowledge.
Mr. Akearok holds a bachelor’s degree in animal ecology from the University of Alberta and a master’s degree in biology from Carleton University. He is also an active member of his community and is fluent in Inuktitut.
