Andrew Applejohn is the Executive Director, Programs at Polar Knowledge Canada (POLAR), overseeing both the science and technology efforts undertaken by POLAR as well as its Knowledge Mobilization and Engagement Unit. In this role, he leads POLAR’s Grants and Contributions unit working alongside POLAR’s Executive Team to provide leadership and support to Canada’s Arctic and Antarctic research programs.

For more than a decade Mr. Applejohn was the Senior Science Advisor to the Government of the Northwest Territories, responsible for developing overarching science policy and implementing the government’s research agenda, and working to connect local, regional, territorial, national and international agencies in support of research efforts important to the NWT. As Director of the Aurora Research Institute for more than nine years, Mr. Applejohn was the Science Administrator of the NWT, responsible for issuing science permits for more than 1,000 research projects, under the authority of the Scientists Act of the NWT.

Mr. Applejohn has served on over 50 advisory committees related to northern research and development, including the NWT Environmental Studies Research Fund, the Territorial Science Advisors Forum, the Science and Technology Advisory Committee for the Canadian High Arctic Research Station. Andrew has lived and worked in the NWT for over 27 years and is a resident of Yellowknife.
