Beate Sander

Beate Sander, RN, MBA, MEcDev, PhD, holds a Canada Research Chair in Economics of Infectious Diseases. She is a Scientist and Acting Director of the Toronto Health Economics and Technology Assessment collaborative at the Toronto General Hospital Research Institute, University Health Network, and Associate Professor at the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto. She holds appointments as Adjunct Scientist at IC/ES (formerly known as Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences), and Public Health Ontario.

Dr. Sander is an internationally recognized leader in infectious disease economics with extensive expertise in health economics and simulation modelling. She is the principal investigator of several multidisciplinary projects funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and other organizations. Her research focuses on assessing infectious disease interventions using simulation modeling and on estimating the burden of infectious diseases using population-based data. She spearheaded the linkage of laboratory and reportable disease data with administrative data in Ontario, enabling novel approaches to study the economic burden of infectious diseases. Dr. Sander has received several awards for research excellence.

Dr. Sander is an expert to national and international advisory bodies, including Canada’s National Advisory Committee for Immunization (NACI), where she chairs the Economics Task Group and co-chairs the Economic Guidelines Task Group — a group tasked with developing national guidelines for the economic evaluation of vaccines, which will set the standard for conducting economic evaluations for vaccines in Canada. Dr. Sander co-chaired the Ontario COVID-19 Modeling Consensus Table from March 2020 to March 2022 and is a member of Ontario’s Science Advisory Table, leading timely COVID-19 evidence generation and knowledge mobilization. Dr. Sander is a member of several federal expert advisory committees and President Elect of the international Society for Medical Decision Making.
