Alta Charo is the Warren P. Knowles Professor of Law & Bioethics at the University of Wisconsin, and an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the National Academy of Medicine. She was a member of Pres. Clinton’s National Bioethics Advisory Commission, and in government she worked as a policy analyst at the congressional Office of Technology Assessment, the US Agency for International Development, and the FDA. She co-chaired the National Academies’ committees on embryonic stem cell research and human genome editing, and now serves on the World Health Organization’s committee on global governance of genome editing, as well as the National Academies’ standing committees on emerging science technology issues.
